Located on the banks of Bayou Rapides, about 18 miles west of Alexandria, this elegant, yet simple house is typical of plantation homes constructed between the years of 1820–1860. The house, flanked by two chimneys, was originally roofed with wood shingles. All beams are mortised and pegged and the gallery is 60 feet long and more than 12 feet wide. The simple columns along the gallery add a touch of the Greek revival architectural style, popular at the time.
“Bayouside” was constructed by Captain John Augustin Texada for his second wife. “Captain Jack,” as the builder was called, was the son of Don Manuel Garcia Texada, a Spaniard, who arrived in Natchez in the 1780s. Drawing its wealth from the rich central Louisiana soil, Bayouside prospered until the Civil War. After Captain Jack’s death, the place was sold to J. Milton Dunnam, a confederate veteran, and the house remained in the Dunnam family approximately 93 years. The house then became the residence of Drs. St. John “Roodee” and Alice “Sissy” Chilton. Bayouside is now a home of David and Julie Gill.
